What Is a Deepfake Attack?

A deepfake is a synthetic media product — audio, video, or image — created using artificial intelligence to convincingly replicate a real person's voice, appearance, or both. The technology has advanced rapidly in recent years. What once required significant technical expertise and expensive hardware can now be produced by anyone with a consumer laptop and a few minutes of source audio or video.

Organisations and families that have established clear verification protocols, where it is normal and expected to confirm identity through secondary channels before acting on unusual instructions, are significantly more resistant to this class of attack.
